IRS Tax ID Number

A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is an identification number used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the administration of tax laws. It is issued either by the Social Security Administration (SSA) or by the IRS. A Social Security number (SSN) is issued by the SSA whereas all other TINs are issued by the IRS.

Employer identification number, or EIN, is also known as a taxpayer identification number, or TIN. A sole proprietorship that has no employees and files no excise or pension tax returns and a LLC with a single owner (where the owner will not be filing employment tax returns) are the only businesses that do not need an employer identification number. In these instances, the sole proprietor uses his or her social security number as the taxpayer identification number.
